Search Engines and Directories

The very first thing you need to know is that search engines and directories are not the same thing.
  • Directories
A directory is a site containing a database of websites, separated into numerous different catagories. These sites are maintained by humans, and as such, your position on these sites is dictated by the people who run them. The perfect example of such a dirctory is Yahoo
Now, there is no guaranteed way that you can get a good ranking on one of these sites, but the best advice I can give to you, is to make sure that the content of your website is good. What I mean by this is:
    • Make the site easy to navigate.
    • Try to keep download times down by not filling your pages with unnecesaraly large images.
    • Have lots of useful and relevant information on show, in an easy to access form.
    • Make sure all of the links in your pages work.
    • Possibly the most important thing, make sure the site looks complete. 'Under Construction' signs are a real no-no.
  • Search Engines
A search engine is a completely different kind of beast. Unlike directories, they are not controlled or updated by people, but by sophisticated computer programs called spiders, or robots. The best example of a very sophisticated search engine would be Google
It is with these sites that you can have a certain amount of control over the ranking of your website within their database. All you need to know is how to go about that, and that's what I'm here to show you.

So what do search engines look for when they rank a site? Well, different engines work in different ways, so we'll cover all the bases to be on the safe side.

Generally, they look at several, or all, of the following:
    • Titles. The title tag in the html code of your page.
    • Meta Tags. These give a description of your website and define the relevant keywords as well as giving specific instructions to the spiders or robots.
    • Text. The main body of text within your pages.
    • URL Some search engines look at the url of your site.
    • Link Popularity. Some of the more sophisticated search engines look at how many links there are from other sites, pointing to yours.
Okay then, now you know the basics, it's time to make use of this information in the next step : Titles, Tags and Text.
