Link Popularity Doorways and Site Maps

Link Popularity

Search engines are constantly changing the way they rank websites, different engines often taking different factors into consideration. One of the more recent things some engines look at is link popularity. The more links pointing towards a website, the better it will be ranked.

There is a shortcut to getting a high link popularity rating, and that`s with schemes such as LinksToYou, though recent information suggests that many search engines are now wise to these schemes, and will actually penalise you for making use of them.

There is also a theory in some quarters that suggest links pointing from your site to other large sites, even if they don`t have a link back to you, can have a positive effect on your ranking. I can`t confirm this, but am giving it a try anyway. See those tiny links at the bottom of the page to various search engines? That`s an experiment, to see if a link to the engines will have an effect on my ranking with them.

Doorways

So, now your thinking, `if all search engines work differently, how can I get good results with all of them?`
Well, there`s never any guarantee that you can ever do that, but what you can do is try and cover all the bases, and to do this, you need to create what are called `doorways`.

What happens here is, you make special pages, each using different title, keyword and description tags, and different text on the page, describing what is contained within your site. Each of these pages contains a link to your main website, using something like `Enter Here` to point the user in the right direction.

Something I`ve done is to create two pages for each main subject of my site, each following two different sets of rules. One set being, `cram in as many keywords as possible`, the other being `use only the really important keywords`.
I`m also finding I`ve started getting good results by making pages where say the three main keywords are used for the title and description tags, and are the first words of text that appear on the page.

Site Maps

A site map is a page on your website that contains links to every other page on your site.
The trick here is to have a link to your site map from your index or front page. What this does is give search engines an easy path to index every page on your site without having to dig too deeply into the structure of your site.
Many search engines claim they will index the whole of your site, but in truth, most only go down a couple of levels into your various sub-directories.

One trick I've implemented, which has proved very successful is to place a site map within the NO FRAMES section of my index page. This is especially useful, as not only do many search engines struggle to cope with frames, but the site map is full of keywords relating to the various sections of my site.
