Being Sticky
Now, you may have done an awsome job on promoting your website, BUT, this is worth nothing
if your visitors don`t actually stay. The most common type of traffic is what`s known as the `click through`.
This being where the visitor comes into your site, takes a very quick glance around, and then leaves.
Why would they do this? Well.. there are several reasons.
Be User Friendly
One of the quickest ways to lose your visitors is by making your site hard to navigate. People
don`t want to have to hunt around to find what they`re looking for, so make it as easy and as
obvious as possible.
Be Complete
NEVER ever have any pages on your site that say `Under Construction`. I can`t stress this strongly enough... DON`T DO IT!
If a section of your site isn`t ready yet, don`t run a link to that section. There`s nothing more annoying than to see a
link to just what you`re looking for, only to find there`s nothing actually there. Your visitor will leave, and most
likely not come back.
Be Sticky
What this means is, try to create a site that will give people something they want, that they enjoy using or viewing, or
that they find useful. Give them something that will make them come back for more. Have you ever been to a site that looked
awful, you couldn`t find what you wanted, and half of the links didn`t work? You probably
sat there and thought `well this is a load of rubbish!` Sites like this are the opposite of `sticky`, and this is what you
need to avoid.
To sum up then, if you can achieve all of the above, given time, you won`t have to try too hard in promoting your site (though don`t stop promoting it)
as it will generate it`s own success. People will see how useful or enjoyable it is, and link to it from their own sites. This can create something of a
snowball effect, and it`s possible to recieve massive ammounts of traffic over time.
