There are a number of things you need to know about how internet chat works, before you go
diving into the first chatroom you find... especially this one. I`m not talking
about knowing how the software works, but how your behaviour will effect your stay, and that of
others, in the chatroom.
Let me put it like this... suppose you walk into a bar you`ve never been to before. Maybe you
know the barman, maybe not... but you certainly don`t know anyone else.
Now, just think... what would happen if you started running your mouth, making fun of other people
in the bar, or just being very loud and obnoxious?
I`ll tell you... either someone would get pissed off and pick a fight with you, or
someone would get fed up and leave.. quite likely causing the barman to throw you out.
It works exactly the same way in a chatroom.
`Okay,` you might say, `but this is on the internet... there is no barman, and no-one can actually
touch me from here.`
Let me put you straight. Very often, there is a barman, and in the case of this chatroom, that is me , arry, or any of the other operators.
We can ban you from this room, and if you upset other users, we will do exactly
that.
As for people not being able to hurt you..well, you`re wrong again. There are two things
that could happen. Firstly, you could find yourself being `Nuked`, which is where another
user attacks your computer using some very nasty software, causing you a lot of problems.
Secondly... it really isn`t that difficult for a resourceful or persistant person to actually
find your home address, and you really wouldn`t want some psycho knocking on your door would you?
So what, you may ask, are you supposed to do? How should you bahave?
It`s pretty simple really.. join the room, and for the first few visits, just sit back, watch.. get to
know the people, and what they are like. By all means join in the conversation.. but don`t try to
take over, and don`t try to show off. Chances are, you`ll just end up looking stupid.
Once you`ve gotten to know the people, you`ll know who you can wind up a bit and have a laugh with, and who
such behaviour is likely to upset. Who is interested in what... and so on.
There are certain other things that are considered `bad manners` too. Don`t go sending private
messages to people who you don`t know, without at least asking first. Believe me, it`s very annoying.
Just because they are in the same room as you, it doesn`t automatically mean that they want a
private conversation with you.
Don`t assume that because a person doesn`t speak perfect English that they are stupid. Such
an assumption is stupidity in itself.
Now, you`ll find that people in chatrooms, this one in particular, can be a very helpful
crowd. So, if you should ask someone for help with something... LISTEN to what they are saying to you,
and follow their instructions. To do otherwise is utter ignorance, and they`ll soon decide not
to waste their time on you.
DO NOT TYPE USING ALL CAPS. It`s seen as shouting, and is VERY annoying
At the end of the day, what it comes down to is this..
You are a guest in any chatroom you go to. Try to behave like one. Don`t go believing that
you have some god given right to be there. You don`t.
Okay.. got all that? Good, now go and have fun.. because that`s what it`s all about, having fun
with other people in a friendly environment.
